Arrival

Main Promenade - Starbase 93

With her suitcase in tow, she looked at the massive size of the promenade, the central lifeline of the Starbase. The hustle and bustle of Starbase 93. A frontier type facility, however able to defend itself against incursions.

She made her way through the security lineup, showing her orders. Getting checked, she was silent, and looked for the pathway to her new quarters. She wasn’t sure about the new position, being the Chief Medical Officer on a Station this size usually meant something more. More responsibility, dealing with more problems and more or less, helping the CMO’s of the sector.

Was she up for the challenge? Someone in Starfleet thought so.

Suddenly someone placed their hand on her to gentle push her aside, “Excuse me.” the security personnel said rushing by. Than three more rushed by. Her eyebrow raised, than a smirk. Maybe she should stop by the infirmary.

As she slid in, she noted the nurse, and an EMH active. Looking around, she introduced herself. The EMH Nodded, and directed her to the office, where she could find a Medical Lab coat. She followed suit, and let the Command Yeoman know of her arrival and assumption of the Medical Duties. She would unpack later.

There was a bit of reading to do, which she would drown herself in during the downtime between activity, and would take the time to meet the CO and others later.

“Doctor Tris, we have a injury coming in, Shrapnel and basic surgery is required.” a Nurse reported.

Taking a pause from reading the computer screen. “Very well, prep the surgical bay, and scrub in.” she ordered.

She enjoyed surgery, it gave her a chance to relax and let her do what she did best. Moving to the back of the Infirmary, she scrubbed her hands, and noted the time of the patient beam in. She finished her scrub, and put her mask on. Looked at the staff and smiled, which you couldn’t see through the mask.

“Let’s do this. Initial Scans show the Arteries are intact, but we should be careful, it is near the Adductor Hiatus. If that is cut we run the risk of the patient bleeding out.”

As she went in for the initial exploration she noted that the shrapnel was pressed on the Adductor Hiatus, which would make it tricky to remove. They would have to find a way other than the modern way to remove it. Furthermore the pressure inside, it may be problematic. They cleaned the shrapnel in the tissue surrounding the problem as Meila thought of a way to go around it, if she could super-heat it would it not cauterize it? It would damage the surround muscles, but either way the muscles are going to be damaged.

“Computer get me the EMH.” Meila requested.

Moments later the EMH Appeared in the Scrub Bay. “Yes Doctor?”

“If I superheat this metal would it not cauterize the Adductor Hiatus to the point where it would seal it and prevent it from rupturing?” Meila asked.

“Judging from Initial Scans that are made available in this case, I would say it would be a probable solution. However, without more updated information I cannot provide a proper solution.” the EMH said.

“He doesn’t speculate. We lucked out with the one who doesn’t have a personality.” the Nurse said. “But when you vaporize something, doesn’t it spread to things it is connected too?”

“You can target specific materials in medical procedures. It is an older technique.” Meila said tapping on her belly where her Wurm was and gave a wink.

This was the one thing that Meila hated, playing with someone’s life. It was about a 50/50 chance of working. “Laser Scaple.” she said, “Get ready, you may have to have the thermal suture ready and bandage quickly, in hopes… well yeah…”

Two hours later.

Leave it to Meila to have something simple, to turn into something complicated on her first day. She changed out of the Surgery garb and made her way to the sinks. She looked over to the Nurse who was visibly giddy.

“You okay there?” Meila asked.

“Yes Doctor. That was fun!” the young nurse said.

Meila threw her gloves into the waste basket and smiled… “You did well. I am going to be in my quarters.”

Stopping by the office to pick up her suitcase she quickly ducked out of the infirmary and made her way to the habitat ring. It was much larger than the Nor Type stations that she had encountered in the past. The doors swooshed open and the first thing she saw was a bottle of wine from the Senior Staff of the Powhatan and a wrapped wall section.

“Computer, play some Earth Fem-Power-Pop from the 2020’s.” she read the card and smiled, it was the shape of a fish. She grabbed the corner, and it was a large wall of Fish… A FISHTANK!

“Fishies!” she exclaimed. But wait, not just any fishes, her fishes from Sickbay. She sat down and watched the fishes, it was very relaxing and calming.

Beginning the process she had become so used too, she began to unpack. clearing off the shelf, she started with her medical texts, poets from around the Alpha Quadraint, and a few sculptures.

She had requested an Eisle but wasn’t sure if it was allowed on the space station, as most furniture had to be bolted down, incase of Gravity issues or attacks. She still had her Art Padd.

The picture of her and Andrew Morris in Paris… she missed him. He died what he loved doing, in the line of service. Saving lives, and being a cowboy. She took a step back and listened to the words of the song as it seemed to get louder and louder in her ears. It sung, and echoed in her quarters.

She went into the lavatory, hoping for a bathtub, she lucked out, she got what she had requested. Starships versus Starbases, and being a member of Senior Staff. It usually meant they got what they wanted.

Feeding the fish, she felt the need to sleep. It was a long day.
